Radio personality, Nikki Z, sent out a Black Panther challenge and top dancehall star, Popcaan, answered and answered in a big way.
Nikki’s challenge was for anyone who can afford to do so, to step up and sponsor someone less fortunate to see the movie Black Panther. Popcaan took up the sponsor and did way more than Nikki Z was expecting. The former Vybz Kartel protégé paid for every single child at Walker’s Home in Jamaica to go and see the movie. Nicki posted a video on her Instagram in which she had nothing but high praises for the deejay.
“He said, ‘Nicki, I want to give all the money for all the children at Walkers Home to go see Black Panther’”, Nikki said with tears almost coming down her face. “And not only for the kids to go see Black Panther, Popcaan gave me the money to make sure those kids got their Popcaan and Juices… Popcaan you are f#(king awesome,” she continued.
Nikki also reminded people not to believe all the negativity about Popcaan that they read and hear.
Popcaan joins a list of high profile celebrities who have helped less fortunate children and adults all over the world to see the movie. Kendrick Lamar and his record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) hosted a free screening of Marvel’s Black Panther for kids from the Watts housing projects in L.A. NFL wide receiver and Philadelphia native Jaelen Strong gave 60 kids from Philly a private screening of Black Panther on opening night.
These celebrity efforts to offer opportunities to children to see the film come after the #BlackPantherChallenge movement emerged on social media encouraging people to raise money or buy tickets for kids to see the movie.
