2018 will be a great year for dancehall reggae. There is a chance that two of the genre’s biggest stars could be released from prison. One is guaranteed to be release unless some unforeseen issues arise; the other one’s freedom is riding on a successful appeal.
Rapper, Jay Z, said if it was up to him Vybz Kartel would be releases from prison over Buju Banton, dancehall fans will just have to wait and see.
Buju Banton, whose given name is Mark Myrie, is serving a 10 year sentence for cocaine charges. The Federal Bureau of Prisons’ website is reporting the artiste’s new release date is December 8, 2018.
Vybz Kartel was given a life sentence at the Home Circuit Court in Kingston in March 2014 for involvement in the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.
While the world boss is not eligible for parole until after serving 35 years of his sentence, the courts are prepared to hear his appeal in 2018.
So dancehall fans have a lot to look out for in 2018. One of their stars could be free in early 2018 and another is guaranteed to be free in late 2018.
Even though Buju Banton’s charges are less serious than Kartel’s and smell like a setup, one has to hope that Kartel is freed first, at least if you are a Gaza fan. If Buju Banton is freed first, that basically means that Kartel’s appeal is unsuccessful and the world boss will have to wait is 35 years for parole. By that time, most of Kartel’s fans would be too old to throw him a welcome home party.
One way or the other, dancehall fans will have something great to celebrate in 2018.
